I read that walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, is a chance to honor the history of those who marched there in defense of voting rights.

We spent the night in Selma at the St. Thomas Hotel, where our room had a beautiful view of the Alabama River and the bridge. As we crossed, we met locals who shared their own stories about the area. It was well worth the visit.

One woman we met asked us to pass along a message: “If you come to Selma, don’t just walk the bridge. Come into town, eat at our restaurants, and shop in our businesses.”

Everyone was so friendly. I only wish we’d had more than a day.
